Eating Florida

Looks like eating Florida is a popular thing to do. We have another person also eating Florida. What's important at this stage is to stop looking at what you over eat as food and look at it as the state--how ever you can visualize it. If you have trouble visualizing, then imagine the map of Florida on or in the food as you eat it.

Likewise with your disappointments. Identify them as much as you can, i.e. your job, relationship, your expectations of yourself vs. what you've actually accomplished. As you eat, visualize these disappointments along with the state of Florida on or in the food.

The first step is to observe which is what you are now doing by observing that it is not food that you eat, but your disappointments. And you're making them as real as possible by visualizing them or imagining them.

Avoid making yourself wrong for eating the disappointments. Let yourself know that you are unhappy eating your disappointments and that you'd prefer to take the emotions straight and leave excess food out of it and right now your are eating them.

Also remind yourself that there are other ways of dealing with these real life disappointments and right now you are eating them.

Now what's important to know is that you maybe have been eating these disappointments for years, so how soon will you stop eating them?

It varies from person to person, some people stop immediately (and it's one day at a time) others continue eating the disappointments for days, weeks, and sometimes even months as in the mean time the creative unconscious moves to a healthier means of dealing with the disappointments.

Keep posting on your progress with what I've shared with you. I'll be away on vacation for a week which will give you plenty opportunity to post.

Take the challenge and post what you are really eating. Go back to the last post I made if you're wondering what I'm asking for.

Free Weight Loss Counseling

Hey, I need a little help here. In my last post I talked about what we are really eating. It looks and tastes like food but has nothing to do with food. We eat our accomplishments and disappointments. Does that make sense to you? Tell me what you're eating so we can go to the next step.

This is all a logical progression. Something does or doesn't work out as we expect and there is a resultant emotion. If we can not let it be that we feel the particular emotion we dilute it with food.

Of course we would not be feeling the emotion if it weren't for the event that did or did not work out as we wanted. Symbolically then we are eating that particular event or thing that didn't work out as we desired or what did work out as desired.

Since I'm an emotional eater, let me be the first to share. Two years ago my financial life started to crash which I had trouble letting be. I was limited as to what I could do about it and had difficulty letting that be. The resultant emotions were uncertainty, confusion, and depression. Of course things were a bit more involved than I have space to share in this post--I could write a few chapters about my life unraveling. And just as I was putting my life back, the stock market crashed which further challenged my situation. Again I had trouble letting all this be and felt more uncertain, confused, and depressed.

Result was that even with all I know about emotional eating I ate twenty pounds of my disappointments.

The difference was that all during this time I knew exactly what I was eating--that I was eating my life situation--the possibility of even losing my home. I didn't cop out crying about a weight problem or a food problem. I had difficulty dealing with the resultant emotions and diluted them with food.

I kept telling myself that I'd like to forget about food and stop eating my disappointments and then one day in the midst of all the uncertainty, anxiety, confusion and depression, I stopped eating my life's situation. I stopped diluting the emotions and started taking them straight.

Like I said, I could write a few chapters about everything that went on in my life for a year and a half. Essentially I applied everything I knew about emotional eating which is already in my book--the Scale Conspiracy.

So if you're reading this post and have been emotionally eating, take this opportunity to get a handle on it. Comment on what you have been eating. I'll take it from there.

High Gear Weight Loss--What are You Really Eating?

This blog is about curing emotional eating, so let's cure your emotional eating. Of the dozens and dozens of articles and blogs about emotional eating they advise to reduce the stress that contributes to having emotions. How silly. It's like telling you not to breathe.

It's actually the stress of the emotion that's the problem.
But what causes the emotion? Let's say that it's simply when things work out or don't work out as desired.

When I had my auto accident, it certainly wasn't something I wanted. What I wanted was a smooth trip home and instead I had an accident. I felt upset, uncertain and confusion as a result of the accident.

Now if upon arriving home I had snacked or eaten excess food it would have been because I had a problem handling the upset, confusion, or uncertainty. But what caused the emotions? The auto accident, right?

So figuratively speaking, I would have been eating my auto accident. So what you might say.
It's a huge point. it looks like food, tastes like food but has nothing to do with food. Get the picture? I can stop deluding myself about food having anything to do with food. I'm eating my accident and I can eat it until I get fed up (pun intended) eating my accident.

As I look at the food, I see my dented car in the food. I stop looking at is as being ice cream, cookies, cake... Notice I'm focusing on the accident as opposed to focusing on food.

I hope what I've written make sense to you and that it wets your appetite (pun intended) to know more,

Now we don't expect that this is going to make an overnight difference although it may. What are you eating is the question? Some of my clients have been eating their jobs, their elderly parents, their accomplishments, their misbehaved children, their unrealized expectations of themselves...

Follow me on this and post what you have been eating.

Hypnosis and NLP

I find it amazing how many different approaches there are to dealing with emotional eating. Just happened upon an article from a fellow (actually it's a she) hypnotist from the UK suggesting that it's about getting rid of unwanted emotions. Click here to read the article. She has a twenty minute cd to download in which she claims to provide encouragement to lose weight. I'm not sayin that the cd won't work for some people, but I can't image handling the whole gamit of emotional eating in one twenty minute cd.

Just because we're both hypnotists doesn't mean that we use the same suggestions or even similar suggestions. She suggests NLP (neuro lingistic training) and EFT (Emotional Freedom Therapy). NLP is about grounding or association of a particular thought with a specific action or motivational statement which I also use in my work. EFT is about tapping on certain accupressure points. From my experience it's mainly suggestive and more likely to work with the gullable client.

Again, I'm not saying that none of these techniques are beneficial, but they don't tackle how to deal with emotions. It's like telling someone that by avoiding stepping on the cracks in the pavement, they will avoid emotional eating. The suggestion is very unsophisticated and the fact is that we live in a more and more sophisticated world and it helps a great deal if the suggestions make sense.

How many pounds?

OK, we know that excessive eating is connected with emotions so its obvious that I ask these questions for you to ponder upon.
1. How many of those excess pounds are frustration?
2, How many of those excess pounds are confusion?
3. How many of those excess pounds are uncertainty?
4. How many of those excess pounds are connected with happiness?
5. How many of those excess pounds are malaise?
6. How many of those excess pounds are related to upset?
7. How many of those excess pounds are a result of anger?
That's one of the more difficult ones to acknowledge. It gets hid under other feelings.
8. How many of those excess pounds are associated with depression?

When you allow yourself to experience the these feelings, those pounds can come off.

Aftermath of Auto Accident and Emotional Eating

I found that they make radiators out of plastic today instead of metal so I needed to replace my radiator. I also found that my brake line had corroded and developed a leak which is why my car didn't stop soon enough. Overall the news was pretty good and the expense a lot less than it could have been.

Fortunately the photo to the left is not my car--my damage was much less.

The overall result led to feelings of moderate happiness. I was still apprehensive as to what the cost would be to repla
ce the front bumper and a headlight lens.

Once again I was planning on going to dinner and planned gluttony. Actually, I planned on enjoying half of the entree and bringing the remainder home--they serve large portions. However, my fiancee wasn't feeling well, so we stayed home and I had a salad, ear of corn and a small pork chop. A cup of coffee with a small moon cake (Chinese New Year cake) was desert.

Son of a gun, I probably dropped a pound or so where I thought I'd stay constant. It's amazing how many opportunities there are to drop weight.

By the way, I'm only two pounds from goal. Yet since 95% of those who drop weight gain it back, the real challenge is to manage my weight. Challenge because in a couple weeks, I'll be going on vacation and I love buffets which can add many pounds. Yet, I have a quiet confidence that I'll actually find opportunities to stay on target or drop a pound or two.

Emotions Cause Emotional Eating?

Noticed a blog that starts off by saying,

"Emotional eating is caused by stress, loneliness, frustration at home, work and society, boredom and being upset, divorce, job loss, bereavement as well as abuse during childhood, and as an adult."

Now does that make sense to you? If this is the first of my blogs that you've read, it probably makes sense, but if you've been following my blogs, you'll see the absurdity.

I mean, do these emotions cause emotional eating? Sure you may be feeling these emotions while you are emtionally eating, but do the emotions cause the eating or does our inability to deal effectively with the emotions result in over eating?

It may seem like a small difference, but in reality it's a huge difference. It's like saying that sun burns are bad for you and rather than using protective sun tan lotion or limiting exposure to the sun to avoid sun burns, you try to get rid of the sun.

What do you think?

Recycled Advice for Emotional Eating

If you've been following my blog posts very long you'll get a laugh from this article that appeared in U.S. News and World Report titled Need To Lose Weight? Ten Ways to Conquer Emotional Eating. Here they are.

Try blogging or signing up for Facebook or MySpace.

Squeeze bubble wrap.

Volunteer.

Be a realist instead of a perfectionist.

Build up a regular sweat.

Be your own masseuse.

Head for the mall.

Make a "bucket list."

Explore cyberspace.

Let your furry friend give you unconditional love.

What does any of this have to do with emotions? Hey, not that it's not good advice for new activities, but it only provides activities to hopefully mask emotion or a diversion. But won't the diversions create a whole new set of emotions with which to deal? I can't believe such a simplistic article got published in a national magazine. What do you think?

Auto Accident and Emotional Eating

On my way home I was in a fender bender. I lost my brakes as I plowed into the car in front of me. Fortunately the damage to the other car was minimal and the damage to my car could have been worse.

When I came home I got out the ice cream and in the face of a binge I ate about four teaspoons of ice cream and put it back in the freezer. I was amazed that I was satisfied with just four teaspoons. We were going out to dinner and I was planning on some minor gluttony but plans got changed and instead we stayed home. Dinner consisted of a bowl of cottage cheese with fresh pineapple--uhm good. I was going to do some gluttony with a root beer float and parred it down to just a few tablespoons of ice cream without the root beer.

Emotional eating could have ruined my day--not that the accident was fun. I choose to minimally dilute my emotions and leave food out of it. Tomorrow I'll have my car looked at to determine the extent of the damage. Then I can choose to handle the frustration as a result of the damage or the happiness as a result of minimal damage--which ever it might be.

Emotional eating is a double edged sword. If you're frustrated, you'll be tempted to dilute the feeling and if you're happy as the result of an event, you'll be tempted to dilute the feeling with food. That's why it's important to know more about how to handle emotion, stop resisting them, take them straight, look for opportunity to benefit from them...

Emotional Eating and Self Image

How's your self image? I often ask my clients what they feel other's would say about them--not that they should be affected by others thoughts of them--but then the reality is that they are influenced by what others think (another issue--self esteem).

Anyway they respond with adjectives such as:
heavy, overweight, zoftic, whale, thunder thighs, rolly polly, fatso... and the list goes on and on.

I write them down and then ask if we went out on the street and approached someone passing by if he/she would like to meet this person. Of course I get a laugh but then the impact of what I've written down begins to set in.

To deal effectively with emotional eating, it's important to build self image. And this is most often accomplished with affirmations of which there are dozens. One that I particularly like is, "I am a thin person carrying a few extra pounds that are a temporary part of me and I am shedding it."

It's amazing that of all the article I've read and books (except for mine), none of them deal with self image and it's important to move towards a healthy self image. Otherwise, you'll always believe you are heavy, overweight, fat... and because you like to be right--your subconscious--it will keep you that way (can even cause you to gain back weight after you've lose weight.

Does this make sense?

Before you deal with emotional eating...

I find a lot of articles and blogs giving advice on how to end emotional eating. They make it sound so easy with recycled advice from the fad diet era.

Actually, as I've covered in a few recent posts, you get no where if you're infected with candida. Food addictions and food allergies don't give you much of a choice either.

To get rid of candida it can only be done by going on a specific diet--just google candida or use the one in my e-book. Also take acidophilus or probiotics. It can take months for life to return to normal. There are no short cuts and if you go back to eating sugar before your body is completely cleansed of the yeast, the candida will return full force very quickly.

Addictions and food allergies: You're often allergic to what you are addicted to. I was addicted to peanuts and potato chips. Once I had one chip or one peanut, it was an endless binge until my supply was exhausted. I made an agreement with myself that I could eat as many chips and peanuts I wanted, but instead of sitting in a comfortable chair watching TV, it would be in the unfinished basement standing next to the furnace.

Yes, I ate quite a few peanuts and chips there and then got bored with it and now I can't remember the last time I did that. Years later I can now have just one handful of peanuts or chips and am free of subsequent binging.

I was also addicted to Dunkin Doughnuts--the shop was right across the street from my office.
I made an agreement that I'd stop eating doughnuts for six months. When I was tempted to have one, I'd remind myself that I still had five months, three weeks and six days to go.

After a few weeks I forgot about doughnuts. Then I had one after about three months and ended up eating four more. I got depressed and realized, "Well I dropped five pounds and if I did it before, I could do it again and I renewed my agreement to stop eating doughnuts.

I went on to drop twenty pounds. Of course knowing how to deal with emotions also helped me stick to the agreement.
