Losing weight and Keeping it Off

As I read blogs I run upon others who are losing weight successfully. They usually attribute their success to making a change in their schedule, a change in the way they look at food, an increase in exercise, or something else. And they wholeheartedly pass along this technique, change in perspective or gimmick to others. It's like crowing their success and why shouldn't they? It in itself is a great accomplishment.

But as Doctor Warren Levin MD says in the fore ward to my book--The Scale Conspiracy--only 5% of those who lose the weight keep it off. Yes, 95% gain back all the weight and some gain back more. So rather than crow about how to lose weight, it's more powerful to crow about how we keep off weight.

Shedding weight is just the first part of attaining the goal. It's about staying there and why is that such a big problem?

After having worked with thousands of people in the weight management arena, this is what they say, "I was doing really well until I went on vacation. I ate everything in sight and just kept on eating when I came home and gained all my weight back."

Others might say, "I was doing great until my husband lost his job." Of course there are hundreds of substitutions for "husband lost his job."

Think this though. The individual was doing fine, dropped all the weight and did fine until a change happened--vacation or calamity. What does the vacation or calamity involve?

Answer: A series of new stressors and resultant emotions--yes a pleasant vacation is call eustress. Winning the lottery is also a stressor--a eustress.

Rather than look at the situation as a new set of emotions to learn with which to deal, the person gets into, "Oh, I blew it, there's no hope for me," and the pitty potty is engaged with emotional eating.

The answer to successful weight loss is to know how to deal with emotions, how to embrace them rather than dilute them with food, and actually how to benefit from emotions. It's like taking a course on defensive driving or self defense.

Emotional Eating and Candida

My last post was about candida. I reported on a young lady who became infected with candida which is an overgrowth of fungus in the gut. The amazing thing is that antibiotics kill off good bacteria and don't touch the candidia.

Anyway from her comment, I learned that she did indeed gain quite a bit of weight which doesn't surprise me. What this means is that conditions such as candidia, food allergies and addictions which I've written about before, must be identified before one even deals with emotional eating.

As I've said a hundred times, excess eating and weight are merely a symptom--not the problem. They are the symptom of candidia, food allergies and food addictions, a thinking problem, and emotions.

Even though many doctors are totally ignorant about candida in the gut, the good news is that it's easy to identify candidia, food allergies and food addictions. Just google candida or candidia albicans and you'll get a dozen sites giving you the symptoms and the diet to correct it along with suggested supplements such as probiotics.

The complication is that if you've had candidia, food allergies or food addictions for a long time, then your brain has learned to use food for emotional support as well which means that you also want to learn how to handle emotions.

Emotional Eating and Candida

Met this very young attractive lady, Kathleen, at a networking event yesterday. I don't know whether she's an emotional eater or not as she certainly didn't look one pound over weight. But, apparently what she looked like a year or so ago was completely different--not that she was overweight, but she was really sick.

Really sick from something that affects millions of us and many doctors are totally ignorant about it. In fact most doctors won't even (certainly her doctor didn't) acknowledge its existence. In fact the way her doctors treated her condition only made it worse. So bad that she's lucky to be alive.

I'm writing about is since I also suffered from the same condition but was lucky enough to find healthy advice and didn't depend on doctors. And I also know that a significant number of those who are overweight also have the condition. For most people the condition doesn't advance to the degree it did for Kathleen. But it does keep you from losing weight.

The condition is candida
and this is part of what she says about her night mare with it, "My case was very serious. That's because my doctor had me on antibiotics nightly for years for treatment of my pelvic kidney. I cannot possibly relay the depth of my pain and suffering to you, but I am telling my story to help others from such a fate. One of the many horrors of the experience for me, and others who suffer from this condition, were the unrelenting negative thoughts that pounded in my head constantly, and I couldn't get them to stop. I had always been a positive person, and this new condition was shocking. I would pray at night for God to take my soul. The yeast toxins inflamed my brain tissue, and everything went out of whack, beyond your imagination. It looks like mental illness. It happened so suddenly that my doctors first thought it was a buried childhood trauma which had suddenly awakened. Much later I was diagnosed with depression (which didn't seem to capture my experience or seem to fit), and then a year later, bipolar disorder. My mood constantly shifted, and I cried a lot, with panic attacks seemingly coming out of nowhere. I was so angry I could feel it coming out of my pores. I couldn't leave my house for about the first 6 months. I was nearly incapacitated. My boyfriend cooked all of my meals for me, and coached me through all of my fears and challenges that I was experiencing, minute by minute. I didn't feel like me anymore. I am thinking now of the pain, and sigh in relief that it is finally over."

I encourage you to read her full story and learn a lot more about this condition by going to her website.

Emotional Eating "Love or Money"

"A new pair of shoes lasts longer than sex"

Who Ate My Happiness (Emotional Eating)?

Today I got the sense that I'm sabatoging myself. I'm just two or so pounds from my goal weight. I had breakfast this morning (around 9:00am) with my son who dropped by to help me with a project. Later on I went out for a while to take my mother grocery shopping and returned home around 1:30pm. I had no desire to eat anything but had a root beer float anyway. It was then that I was asking me if I'm sabatoging me.

Later in the evening we went to a country fair nearby. It's the last one of the year and I chose to have a gyro, zeppoles, some roasted nuts and a share of ice cream--chocolate of course.

Just wondering what the stupid scale will say in the morning--expecting to be about four pounds from goal instead of three.

Who Ate My Happiness? is the title of an interesting article. It's short and quick to read. One intriguing question is:
"What is your mind full of when you feel empty?"

Emotional Eating and Indigestion

Went out to dinner the other evening to Applebees and took advantage of their two for twenty dollar deal. It was good and the portions were just right. My friend and I shared a chocolate desert to complete dinner--we're both chocoholics.

The only thing I dislike about eating out is that generally it's eating later than usual and around 1:00pm I awakened with indigestion--a bad case of it. Fortunately I remembered the coral calcium water that I drink every day. I say, "remember" because for over a year--I was fifteen pounds heavier-- I suffered from indigestion on a regular basis and never thought about the coral calcium that is readily available to me. It's kinda like frantically looking for your car keys with them in your hand all the time.

Anyway, I went to the kitchen and poured the water from my bottle of coral calcium into a bowl so I could dump out a few grams of the coral into a cup. I then took a teaspoon and consumed a teaspoonful of coral. I chewed it well and swallowed it. That was the instantaneous end of my indigestion and off to sleep I went.

Note that not all coral calcium is really from coral--you can tell because real coral calcium can be chewed whereas the fake stuff is nothing but beach sand. The coral calcium is great as it also provides me all the minerals my body needs on a daily basis.

Emotional Eating a Mental Illness

A few posts ago I posed the question as to whether emotional eating is a mental illness after I reviewed an article stating that emotional eating is a mental illness.

Obesity is already considered a medical problem meaning that technically anyone who works with obese people must be a medical doctor otherwise he/she could be accused of practicing medicine without a medical license.

Technically anyone working with an obese person must have a referral from the obese person's attending physician in order to work with them.
Now if emotional eating is declared an emotional illness, then only medical doctors (since they can already work with obese people), psychologists, psychotherapists, and maybe social workers, can work with emotional eaters. Thus anyone working with an emotional eater without a referral can be accused of practicing psychology or psychotherapy without a license.

Since emotional eating is so new, is it possible that someone without a license in medicine or psychology might know more about overcoming emotional eating? Maybe.

Generally there's no problem obtaining a referral from medical doctors and I imagine that most psychologists who don't claim to be experts with overeating wouldn't mind it also. The problem might be (and maybe I'm just overreacting) that a large percent of emotional eaters (all who have medical doctors) don't have a psychologist or psychotherapist. So if emotional overeating is declared as a mental illness, not only would a medical referral be required, but also a referral from a psychologist.

Might this mean that the emotional eater would have to go to a psychologist--pay the fee--just to beg the psychologist for a referral to work with someone who specializes in emotional eating? And then also go to his/her doctor for another referral?

Solution for Emotional Eating

Today I rediscovered how to cure emotional eating--eat crabs. Those suckers take forever to eat and you can practically eat them all day long and not gain weight (unless you're drinking a lot of beer). Since we went to dinner last night (and I used the doggie bag simply because the serving was way too large to eat) I skipped breakfast and had crabs for lunch.

Dinner was my left over entree' from last evening--twas delicious.

I don't know why I even bother getting on the scale--just an overwhelming curiosity--since I know it's a stupid device. It's reading that I'm one pound from my goal so after we went to the beach, clonked out for a couple hours, walked a mile or so, we stopped by Dairy Queen and shared a Xtreme chocolate blizzard.

Emotionally, the blizzard was totally affordable.

Emotional Eating "The Stress of Emotion"

Do you like to feel upset?

Do you like to feel down?

Do you like to feel bored?

Do you like to feel uncertain?

Do you like to feel happy?
Publish Post

Do you like excitement?

Most people say that they like happiness and maybe excitement, but not the other emotions.

What is emotional eating about? Well it's about eating to avoid all of these emotions and others such as confusion, anger, malaise...

Emotions can be stressful. But the typical advice for managing stress, i.e. deep breathing, taking a walk, meditation, yoga, relaxation response... does little for handling the emotions of an emotional over eater.

Look at the situation where you're at the boardwalk and you walk into a candy store. Aside from taking a deep breadth (which is not specific) it's impractical to meditate, do yoga... Sure you might walk down the boardwalk and find yourself staring at another candy store.

Specific techniques are needed to deal with emotions that are emotion specific.

Mayo Clinic on Emotional Eating

Even the Mayo Clinic is jumping onto the band wagon of emotional eating. It's amazing--everyone who has ever done anything with diet or eating has jumped on the band wagon of emotional eating.

They all take what they have done for decades in regard to advice and diet and apply the same old approaches to the newly identified term of emotional eating. Click here to read the article.

Sure everyone understands that stress plays a part in over eating. But no one identifies that not only is the stress an issue, it's the stress of the emotions that are there. I almost said, "stress of emotions that are experienced" but that's the problem, the emotions are too stressful to be experienced. If the emotion could be experienced (and this is true for boredom, happiness...) there would be no over eating.

So read the article and tell me where it provides any advice in dealing with emotion. If you notice I've said more in the previous paragraph than the entire article said.

Breaking Free From Emotional Eating

Breaking Free From Emotional Eating is the title of an interesting article. Click here to read it. It's about understanding the programing that we have received since child hood. How we were programed to eat for survival and to eat for pleasure. How then various emotions were associated with these two programs.

Ultimately to cancel the program is to embrace the emotions and deal with them. It's to move beyond, "I have an eating problem" to "I have a problem dealing with emotions." For until you learn how to deal with emotions--how to feel them, experience them--it's unlikely that you can leave excess food out of your life.

Even though there is no author listed--which aggravates me--I wrote it and you can also find it on my website

Conquer Emotional Eating

I see so many posts for overcoming emotional eating like three easy things to do or seven steps to overcome emotional eating. I used to get excited about reading them in hopes of learning something, but I've come to realize that they have their heads up their you know what and know as much about emotional eating as they do about how to launch a rocket to the moon.

In my opinion it's their feeble attempt to make good of a search term "emotional eating" that ranks high in the search engine results. But their advice has little or nothing to do with dealing with emotions. Maybe I sound like a broken record, but damn it wouldn't you expect to see some direction in dealing with emotional eating. Sure they probably have something to sell and wouldn't be giving you all the goodies, but to think you'd buy their wares by teasing you with some recycled advice that has nothing to do with emotions, where they came from, how to deal with them, how to stop diluting them with food, how to refocus your life, how to build self esteem, self confidence..., isn't that an insult to your intelligence?

What does self esteem and self confidence have to do with overcoming emotional eating? Maybe a lot, maybe not so much, but I've seen clients generate some disappointing emotions from a poor self image or a lacking of self confidence.

Improve Eating Habits to Deal with Emotional Eating?

When it comes to weight loss, "emotional eating" has certainly become the buz phrase of the decade--maybe the century. Everyone is writing about how to overcome emotional eating. Click here for another article on Losing Weight Improving Your Eating Habits. Certainly says nothing about emotional eating in the title but later in the article emotional eating is identified. Please read the article and tell me if you think there is any real advice other than typical advice on how to deal with emotional eating. Does it talk about embracing emotions? How to experience them? How to use them?

Again I'm not saying the advice is bad, it just has nothing to do with dealing specifically with emotional eating. Sure ultimately if you deal effectively with emotional eating your eating habits will indeed improve--it's a given.

I Blew it "Emotional Eating Got Me"

Years ago I would have said, "I blew it!" after having a complete dinner and not using a doggie bag. But today I say, "It was delicious and I enjoyed it." What's the difference? I chose to eat everything I ate and enjoy it. What about weight gain? There won't be any since it was just a blip in the week and totally affordable in terms of my emotional choices. Found another article, How to Overcome Emotional Eating in which the author sums everything up by saying, "Finding new ways to solve your problems and deal with stress will push food out of the equation. You’ll feel good about finding solutions which will replace the dependence on food." What do you think about this advice? Do you think it will help you truly solve the emotional aspects of emotional eating? More importantly, if you go to the article, what is the sound that is played?

That would be a great title for a weight loss book, right? It's actually the title of an article by sachasacha
In the article it is suggested:

1. Keep a food and mood journal.

2. Have a sensible diet plan.

3. Be honest with yourself.

4. Love yourself.

Overcoming Emotional Eating

There's a great article about emotional eating--at least it's off to a great start. Actually it should be retitled to "About Emotional Eating" Click here to read it and see if you agree with me.

What most experts seem to miss is the power of conditioning. Sure as the article mentions that there is probably some stressful situation that gets one off into emotional eating. The obvious approach which most experts take is to go back in time, ie. recognize the stressful problem and focus on it and solve it. I agree that that's important, but what is forgotten is that in the mean time conditioning has occurred and long after the stressful situation may be resolved, the habit of overeating may still continue. So what is missing here? Clearly solving stressful situations is a plus but it doesn't solve the over eating problem.

It's like many smokers start smoking to be more "grown up" but then once they are in the twenties, thirties, forties... they know they are grown-ups but they still smoke.

A Frustrating Morning--FAt People?

My morning was frustrating. Nothing seemed to go smoothly and I got myself caught in a pitty potty of the many mistakes I made in my life as I was stuck in a traffic jam.

An hour later I decided to stop in at a Wendy's and diluted my frustration with three items from the value menu. So even though I chose to dilute the frustration I limited the diluent and it was also lunch time which I often simply forget about and skip.

But more importantly I found my self sitting with three guys in front of me. One was about 60 pounds overweight, another about 35 pounds and the other one I really couldn't tell since I couldn't see around the guy sitting in front of him.

My thoughts just kinda gravitated to the heaviest of the guys whose stomach made it difficult for him to sit close to the table. I wondered about his level of self confidence. I wondered how he related with others. I couldn't hear what they were talking about--nothing animated--just seemed like make do conversation.

I was wondering who would employ the heavy guy. What kind of job he could get. I would imagine most employers would have the same thoughts. If he can't take charge of his own body, how can he take charge of a job? And the heavier the person is the louder the question.

To me it was obvious that he was an emotional eater. With that amount of weight a lot of issues are created and with each issue are emotional feelings.

A few posts ago I wrote about emotional eating being a mental illness and his appearance seemed to make that issue transparent.

But then we can say the same of chain smokers, and drug addicts.

What do you think?

Oh yes, my frustration did subside as I continued along in my day and was pleased that it was limited in quantity and grateful that my three or four extra pounds are nothing in comparison to what they could be.

Put an End to Emotional Eating?

Happened across another article titled Put an End to Emotional Eating by Jena and Ed Bloch. I was once again hoping for some great advice to match the promise of the title. Great title, right? Arouses your curiosity with one giant promise. Go read the article but don't expect much. The closest they get to dealing with emotions is to suggest writing down your emotions you're feeling before you eat. Could be a great first step and then zero--that's the last mention of emotions.

What the hell are you supposed to do with them? What about emotions? Aren't these questions you'd hope some direction for? Even if they were selling a book for $50, wouldn't you want to know that the answers to those questions would be included?

More recycled advice. Again, I'm not saying that any of their suggestions won't help; I'm saying that only one had any thing to do with emotions.

Emotional Eating Confusion

It's one thing to identify the fact that one is prey to emotional eating. It's another to get real help. Click here for a blog entry in which the person who entered the blog is confused. She's about 40 pounds overweight and knows that she's an emotional eater. Yet the advice she's getting is to make her goal to be healthy. And yet, by most indices she is healthy.

Some answers she has gotten talk about being happy overweight and healthy. I would suggest she focus on dealing with her emotional eating. The problem is that there is very little direction on how to deal with emotions. Have you read any books that tell you how to make any emotion ok to feel?
Have you read any book that tells you how to embrace any emotion? Have you read any book that tells you how to refocus to the stress surrounding your emotional eating? Have you read any book that tells you how to release your creative genius to deal with your stressors?

I've read several top selling books and dozens of articles and none have even addressed these questions much less given any direction. Aren't the answers to these questions what you would hope to find rather than recycled advice from the last century in dealing with over eating? I'm not saying that none of that advice ever works, but long term 95% of everyone who loses weight gains it back so that fact speaks for itself. I mean for some people standing on their heads for three minutes each day will help them lose weight but it has nothing to do with dealing with emotional eating.
