Uncertainty and Emotional Eating

It's been three weeks since we've returned from vacation in Hawaii and the memories are becoming more distant--what a pity. Can't wait to go back to refresh them. Another vacation video of Chinese New Year in Oahu below.

The good news for me is that I've dropped the four or five pounds I collected on my body during vacation in spite of dealing with a lot of stress since I've returned--business pressures and my son was in an accident and totaled his car (fortunately no one was hurt and it wasn't his fault). Nevertheless, we're using my car for the both of us until he's provided a rental or a replacement car.

Emotions: We generally don't think of emotions--we think of the stress but not necessarily the emotions we feel. For instance, we don't think of the uncertainty that is there when we're dealing with a stress and don't know the outcome. Uncertainty is a low level emotion that is there 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week until the stress is resolved. Add to that, the emotions from everyday happenings.

For many of us, there's financial stress which contributes to uncertainty. We're hoping that our ship will come in just in time to save us from a perilous end. Feeling and experiencing uncertainty is a challenge because the stress continues on and on. How do you handle uncertainty? Have you noticed a tendency to eat more during periods of high uncertainty?

Make a log of the things which uncertainty plays a role in your life. Record how often during a day that you feel uncertain. At this point we're not expecting to do anything about uncertainty other than simply notice if it plays a role in your life.

I wrote a book, The Scale Conspiracy, which is about how to handle habitual, emotional eating, and self defeating eating. I guarantee it to be the most valuable book on the subject of how to lose weight that you have ever read or you money back. It's available as an e-book or in soft cover. The Aftermath of Vacation

Yes, I'm down all four pounds that I had gained during vacation, but Macadamias are going to keep me from dropping more today. Yes, this afternoon I took a few macadamias from a small container and I ended up having a few more than I wanted.

As I wrote in my last post, I can have less than desirable eating habits. And rather than preach, "Do as I say, not as I do." I'd rather have everyone know that it's better to do one thing at a time rather than make many major changes at the same time. So rather than have you expect that you need to drop calories and significantly improve the quality of those calories, let's start by simply reducing calories and if the quality of those calories improve, that's great. If not, that's OK too as in time, just as it happens with me, you'll get tired of the non desirable eating behaviors and be amazed to find that you'll eat what you really want and be amazed to find that what you really want to eat will be more nutritious than your imagined possible.

For as you start shedding weight you will be feeling better about you and in time notice a shift toward healthier eating habits. For me, I'm still in vacation mode and it will probably disappear within a few days. See more video below!

All of these insights are available in my book, The Scale Conspiracy, which I guarantee to be the most valuable book on the subject of how to lose weight that you have ever read or you money back. It's available as an e-book or in soft cover. Click here for more information

Back From Vacation--Admission

I'm down three of the four pounds I gained from gluttony over the vacation and probably by the time I weigh myself in the morning I'll be down all four pounds. Most of the people you hear talking about losing weight talk about eating nutritiously. Yet, each of us have that sweet tooth--me too.
Let me go a little into my approach on weight management. First, it's call weight management instead of losing weight for two reasons:
1. The idea of losing causes anxiety. After all, how many things have you been taught to lose. What happens when you can't find your keys or your cell phone? You get anxious, right? So the idea of LOSING is a problem and better to avoid.
2. Weight management provides flexibility. In other words, it you gain a couple pounds, it's OK. So rather than get into a mind set where you have to drop weight consistently, you can drop two or three and go up one or two and then down three or four and up one or two. Knowing this takes away all the anxiety of having to always be perfect in dropping weight.

Now I must admit just as I do in my book that I sometimes have less than excellent eating habits. This goes along with the idea of management. My eating habits can be rotten and they can be great. Most weight loss programs have you focus on healthy eating habits.

So great, you start off being very careful and eating healthy. Now you can only do this so long. I mean you're human and eventually you're going to blow it and when that happens, it can sometimes be the end of the weight loss program--disastrous. With my approach, you have a preference to eat nutritiously and with that in mind, you can also eat non nutritiously.

For instance, I gained four pounds and it wasn't from always eating nutritiously. I experienced my share of gluttony in Hawaii. Now I just dropped three of the four pounds, was free of gluttony but far from being free of nutritious eating.

For instance, yesterday I had two doughnuts and a cup of coffee for breakfast. I had no desire to eat lunch and for dinner I had a salad with no dressing and a bagel with almond butter and guava jelly (from Hawaii). That's far from being nutritious. Today I had a doughnut for breakfast. I had a great desire to have something to eat around 3:00 and on my way home stopped in Costco and had a sausage sandwich and a cup of yogurt swirl. A few minutes ago I had a cup of coffee with a few marshmallows and one dark candy chocolate.

The point is that after a couple days of this kind of eating I will have had my fill of it and gravitate towards a healthier diet tomorrow. It's a back and forth kind of thing.

In the middle of all of this is also the stress of life and the experience of emotion. It's handling the emotion that keeps either my nutritious or non nutritious eating from becoming compulsive or a binge.

How does this approach sound to you? Would you rather be perfect and anxious about every calorie you consume or would you rather manage your life?

The book cover at the top is my new book, How to Build Self Esteem in Your Child--

Fifteen Tips on How to Build Self Esteem in Your Child. It's a must read for every parent for parents ultimately have more to say in the building of their child's self esteem than anyone else. Parents are the role model from which children build self esteem. And remember this. Every child is born with a high level of self esteem. Unfortunately it's unconscious messages from parents that often destroy self esteem in their children. This book explores fifteen typical mistakes many parents make with their children at an early age and then goes on to creating a model from which your child can build self esteem.

Just can't let go of vacation so I added a mountain video below.

Gaining and Losing Weight On Vacation

We left Maui around midnight and got into San Francisco around 6:00 am and had a hearty breakfast. We caught a 9:00 am flight to Newark--both our flights were full and silly me didn't make prior arrangements for seat assignments so we didn't get to sit together on either flight.
When we got home my son had a couple pieces of left over pizza and that was our dinner just in time to see the Giants squeak out their win over the Patriots--Yeah! If you saw it, you know it was a nail bitter.

The big question: How much weight did Nancy and I gain? My gluttony added four pounds for the two weeks. I was thinking also added a few pounds and was surprised to hear that she dropped four pounds.
Back to my normal routine, the four pounds for me will be gone within a week as I prefer to forget about food. That's a great suggestion to use throughout the day. Compound its power by using self hypnosis.
Complete instruction on how to use self hypnosis are in my book--The Scale Conspiracy, Get it in E-book form for only $14.95. Soft cover is $19.95 plus $3.00 handling and shipping and includes a free copy of the e-book--scroll down for the buy button. You'll never be able to cheat again with food.

Last Vacation Post

Saying Good Bye to Maui

The last three days have been action packed. Wednesday we did a dinner cruise with the Alex Cruise Line company. I've been on dinner cruises before and usually the only thing great about the cruises is the scenery. But this time the food was incredible. Nancy didn't think she'd like the mahi mahi so she ordered steak. I ordered the mahi mahi. Both were incredibly delicious so we shared. We ended up sitting with a pilot for American Air Lines who gave us a lot of tips. He made a point of pointing out how he thinks the TSA is way out in orbit with some of their practices and ends up adding a lot of money to the cost of air fair. On the way back to port we saw several whales blowing and breaching. The scenery was incredible. When we returned to Lahania port we had a scoup of ice cream to top off the evening and then drove back to Kihei.

We started Thursday with a small breakfast and spent a quite day at the resort. At 4:30 pm we went to our first lauau of the trip. The food and entrainment was mediocre so we were free of gluttony.

Friday started off with an air of excitement. We took a helicopter ride over the North Eastern mountains and took a lot of great photos and video--go to end of this post. We returned to the resort and had a moderate breakfast. Then we took a ride near Haleakala to the Botanical Gardens--video below. Being at the foot of Haleakala, I decided to drive to the top--see more video below. At around 7,000 feet elevation we rode through the clouds and continued to the top at just a few feet over 10,000 feet.

Needless to say it was a day of incredible sights to photograph and video. We got down the mountain just in time to see the sun set over the mountains behind Lahania. We came back to our resort and Nancy made us soup and a left over hamburger for dinner.

It's been two weeks since I've stepped on a scale and I'm wondering how I'll fair when I get home. I would imagine that I've gained about four or five pounds. I can say that overall I'm appalled with the number of overweight men and women in my age group over 50. I want to hand each one of them a copy of the Scale Conspiracy and wish them well, but I exercise restraint.

Today I published my first book with Amazon on their Kindle offerings. It's title is How to Build Self Esteem In Your Children--Fifteen Tips on How to Build Self Esteem In Your Child—A Must Read Book For All Parents for just $2.99. If I did it right, it should be available in three or four days.

Tomorrow morning before we check out I'm going to shoot some video for the website promoting the book with a tropical background and then we'll have a small breakfast, take a walk along the beach and then check out. Our plane departs at 11:30 pm so we'll have a lot more time to travel around the island. Maybe we'll grab some dinner in Paia near the airport before we leave.

Now a plea! Help me pay for this vacation and pick up your copy of The Scale Conspiracy in E-book form for only $14.95. (just kidding, the vacation has already been paid for and besides you'll love the book). Soft cover is $19.95 plus $3.00 handling and shipping and includes a free copy of the e-book--scroll down for the buy button. You'll never be able to cheat again with food.
