Another Great Day in Maui

Aloha Again,
We started the day with Nancy taking a quick dip in the pool as I checked my email. Then we had a small breakfast of an egg with tomato, a slice of toast, and coffee for we knew that the resort would be providing lunch.

We then joined a group outside our room making leis. As Nancy and the other wives made leis the guys talked about the politics of energy. We all agreed that the best alternative to gas and oil is hydrogen but thought politics would delay it's development.

A few hours later in the early afternoon our resort provided us a lunch. We both ate enough to last most of the day. I had planned on going to the top of Haleakala but when the concierge informed us it would be over a two hour ride each way, Nancy voted against it. I didn't object and later in the afternoon we drove down S Keihi Rd and I found the first resort when I stayed here twenty three years ago. We hung out there and enjoyed a cloud laden afternoon watching whales in the distance jump and blow. There were about a half dozen of them frolicking in the ocean. It brought back some of the best memories of my early life when I first visited Maui. Go to the bottom of this post for a great Maui sunset.

Later we each had one scoop of ice cream just before we watched the sunset. Our video and photos of our trip will be 50% sunsets. A bit later we stopped in a health food store and Nancy wanted to buy a bunch of vegetables for soup. I reminded her we already had the next several days planned out and the last thing we needed is more food.

After we got back to the resort we had a cup of soup and ate a small piece of banana nut bread with coffee for desert.

I'm happy that I recognized contentment yesterday. Even though I'm very much attuned to emotions, I was at a loss for a while with that emotion during our vacation. What emotions are your recognizing that are connected with your excess eating or with temptations to eat?

Aloha From Maui

We left Oahu on Sunday afternoon and arrived on Maui a half hour later. We goofed and sat on the wrong side of the plane so we didn't get any great shots of the islands from the air.

We had a few left overs from our kitchen for breakfast and only ate two roles of shushi for dinner. Nancy ordered some Korean noodle dish and I simply had no desire to eat any of it after the first bite--not a taste I like. Later we shared a muffin with coffee for desert.

Today we went to Lahinia--the only large shopping area on the island. Somehow I missed the signs and the turn and we ended up in the scenic mountainous region of the island. We took our time sight seeing and got some great shots of the mountains and ocean. Go the the bottom of this post for some great video. Unfortunately the surf was calm and there was no action at the blow hole.

On the way back we stopped in Lahinia, parked and meandered a few blocks. Nancy's back was hurting so we didn't walk too far. As far as food goes for the day we basically ate very little as we're planning on a lauau later in the week. We figured that since we haven't been to Maui before we'd do our tourist stuff here. So we're going to take a sunset cruise, go whale watching and take a helicopter ride around the North West end of the island. And somewhere we want to fit in a trip to the top of Haleakala volcano for a sunrise.

During the late part of the evening I was tempted to have some banana nut bread with a coffee. I was wondering what emotion I was dealing with. It wasn't happiness. It wasn't malaise. It wasn't frustration. I just couldn't figure out what I'd be diluting. Later in bed I realized what I was feeling--contentment. Pure delicious contentment.

The challenge with emotions is that we are so programmed to ignore them or pretend that they don't exist, that they can be a challenge to identify. How about you. Is is always easy for you to identify what emotion you're feeling?

If you related with this, then pick up your copy of The Scale Conspiracy in E-book form for only $14.95. Soft cover is $19.95 plus $3.00 handling and shipping and includes a free copy of the e-book--scroll down for the buy button. You'll never be able to cheat again with food.

Gluttony and Vacation

Aloha,

I awakened at 7:00 am with incredible pain in my knee. I slowly limped to the elevator and went to the 26th floor owner's lounge to video tape an introduction for the scale conspiracy web page. I was sure that I'd have another miserable day with my bum knee. Unfortunately I was too late and the lighting was wrong for make the video so I limped back to the room and had a very light breakfast with Nancy.

We took a nap and hung around the room until about 11:30 am. I wanted to walk along the beach and get some video of Royal Hawaiian Hotel (the pink one) before we left. Nancy didn't want to walk on the beach because of the sun--she hates exposing her skin to the sun. But eventually I chided her into a walk on the beach. Much to my surprise as I left our resort my knee got better and better. It was like an instant improvement--pain gone. Just a few hours before with every step I had radiating pain in my knee muscles. I'm not ready for jogging yet, but boosting glutathione has saved my vacation.

But Nancy still didn't want to walk very long on the beach. I got my video of the Royal Hawaiian--which is practically next door to our resort--from the beach and then we walked through the Royal Hawaiian to the street and continued on to the public Waikiki beach where I took more video.

Afterwards I wanted to go a block further inland and check out the stores for a wind breaker, but Nancy didn't want to. She wanted to go to a Chinese restaurant at noon for lunch. It was our first disagreement for the week. She walked into a store while I commandeered a seat along the street to wait for her.

When she finally came out of the store--she seems to get mesmerized in stores and rarely buys anything after spending eons of time trying on clothing--I said, "We have an issue. You don't want to go with me and I don't want to go to a Chinese restaurant. I'd like to walk from Kakalaua Ave over to Kuhio Ave and go back to the beach and later hang out under the tree at the beach"--(there's this fantastic low hanging tree that makes great shade right on the beach.) Go to the end of this post for video from under this tree. "So why don't you do what you want to do and I'll do what I want to do and we'll meet at the resort in two hours."

She decided to go with me and we found some neat stores--she almost bought a stupid Betty Boops clock but at the last moment decided not to. An hour later we happened upon a lunch buffet and decided that we'd go for gluttony. The buffet featured shushi which we enjoyed very much. And with all the food I was amazed that we ate moderately compared to how we could have gorged ourselves. We had basically planned on a lauau which never happened. It was the last food for the day and our only buffet for the week. Later we enjoyed the best sunset of the week and then walked through the streets that were blocked off for the Pro Bowl celebration.

Tomorrow morning we'll be leaving for a week on Maui so this may be my last post for a week as I'm not sure if I'll have access to the internet there. The good news is that so far we are on target with our food intake and enjoying the best of food that we can find.

The good news is that we did not feel that we were our own worst enemy when it came to food but instead loved with it and enjoyed it. Yet I know many of you may feel that when it comes to food that you start the day out with great intentions and perhaps eat little if any breakfast. Likewise at lunch you may eat very little, come home and plan on having just a little of something for dinner. That "little something" turns into a little something more, and then you have a little of something else and by bed time you might have polished off a bag of chips and feel gorged wondering, "What's wrong with me? I'm my own worst enemy."

If your experiences with food are often like that, then pick up your copy of The Scale Conspiracy in E-book form for only $14.95. Soft cover is $19.95 plus $3.00 handling and shipping and includes a free copy of the e-book--scroll down for the buy button. You'll never be able to cheat again with food.

More vacation and food

Aloha,
Aloha means affection, peace, compassion and mercy. I was hoping to share a few photos of Waikiki with you but unfortunately, my wife's new I phone is in Chinese as she is Chinese and she doesn't yet know how to send emails from her new I phone. I have been downloading some video to my computer and if I'm lucky you'll be able to see sunset at Waikiki beach. My apologies, I'm uploading the video but the link isn't happening--you're supposed to be able to click on Waikiki beach in the previous sentence to see the video.

Today I awakened with incredible pain in my knee as I tried to walk. We stayed in and had a small breakfast with coffee, banana nut muffin, danish and toast--a high carb breakfast. Then we took my knee to the hot tub and that did little good for it. Then we took my knee to pool side on the 27th floor and I wrapped it in ice and that did little good. I've been tripling my MaxOne Glutathione accelerator hoping that it will shorten the duration of the agony. Only time will tell.

For dinner I limped along with my wife a short block away to PF Changs. We've noticed that restaurant absolutely full of patrons every night and decided we'd have to try it out. I ordered Nancy a strawberry daiquiri but she's not big on alcohol so I ended up drinking most of it. We skipped appetizers and went straight for the entrees. Nancy had an eggplant dish in soy and I had a steak dish with water chestnuts and snow peas. The portions were just right.

The waitress brought us a chocolate cake for desert--it was eight layers--over a foot long with ice cream. Don't worry, we passed it up and settled for one small--actually it was kind of tiny--container of chocolate mousse.

Afterwards, we went to a nearby shopping area where I hung out sitting on a carved out huge block of wood. Nancy put in her order for a Louis Vuitton Bag for Christmas. I limped back to our resort where we went to the owner's lounge and enjoyed a couple shows on the wide screen tv.

I was amazed that I was free of temptation to eat in response to my agony all day long. I generally am tempted to eat more in response to being happy. But that 's not always true, I remember just last week going through some unplanned eating because of a major disappointment--emotionally I was very frustrated. What emotions do you find the biggest challenge? Let me know. The secrets to dealing with these emotions are in my book--The Scale Conspiracy in E-book form for only $14.95. Eating on Vacation

We met our new friend for breakfast at Moose McGuillyCutties. It was a large delicious breakfast and I saved my banana nut muffin for breakfast tomorrow.

A couple days ago I pulled a muscle in my right knee while getting up from my beach towel. I'd been nursing it along since then, but as we were having breakfast it somehow became aggravated and when I got up to leave my knee was in agony. It reminds me of the intense pain I had in my other knee for over a year before I began using the glutathione accelerator that finally gave me relief.

We didn't take any long walks for the remainder of the day. I treated my knee to the hot tub for a while and babied it the rest of the day around our resort. We combined lunch and dinner and shared a Caesar salad with chicken and an order of pulled pork, Hawaiian style.

I was hoping for another gorgeous sunset, but it was not to happen. In fact the weather report is calling for stormy weather tomorrow.

I was tempted to have some dried pineapple chips after dinner and decided to take my disappointment with my knee straight rather than dilute it with calories. Disappointment is not a feeling that I like and it's real tempting to dilute it with food. Yet, it is my choice. How do you deal with disappointment?

Tomorrow's plan is to have a very light breakfast with banana nut muffin. Depending on how my knee is tomorrow and the weather will determine what ventures we undertake.

Vacation Plans Change

Today we were going to have a small breakfast and be gluttonous for dinner at a lauau. We got up early, spent some time in the hot tub, and then hung out for a half hour at the pool on the roof. Then we had our tiny breakfast as planned so we could be gluttonous later in the day. But, our plans changed. We ended up going to Helio Hattie where we sampled some tasty macadamia nuts in chocolate and then had vanilla pineapple soft serve. We immediately decided to delay the lauau to another day. We missed our trolly by just a minute. While we waited a half hour for the next trolley we met a lady from Tennessee who lives on a farm and has six horses which my wife would love to ride. We might have breakfast with her tomorrow.

Our next stop was at Moose McGillyCuddy's for a Mai Tai--one was sufficient and then we shared one entree of Korean beef/chicken with lots of vegetables at a near by food court. We then returned to our resort and watched an incredibly beautiful sunset from the top floor of our building. My wife bet me $5000 that the sun would disappear behind the clouds and the sunset would be a dud. She will never pay up.

We capped our evening off by sharing a cup of lava flow (chocolate and coffee with a little whipped cream on top) as we watched a local street show of hula dancers. Just scroll down to the bottom of this post to see the pretty hula dancers. The good news is that we're handling the welcome emotions that go along with being in Hawaii and are managing and enjoying our food intake.

Challenge of Staying Thin On Vacation

Vacation can be a challenge when it comes to keeping off weight that has been lost.

Here I am in Hawaii on vacation--a great place to be. We're staying in Waikiki and there is food everywhere.

It's amazing how many people invest months and months to get rid of their excess weight and then at some point after they succeed they go on vacation. What happens to their diet? It's real easy for the diet to go out the window. And then when they come back home, they step on a scale and find that they gained five or more pounds.

Rather than treat the five pounds as a "day tight compartment," they get disgusted with themselves and continue gaining more and more weight until they gain most or all the weight back. And yes, it may have taken them two or three months to get rid of the weight and they end up gaining it all back in a month or so. Why?

Answer: It's important to realize that being on vacation brings a totally new set of emotions than we're accustomed to. I mean, how many people actually go on vacation to lose weight? In all my years as a weight management coach I have never heard a client say, "I went on vacation to start my diet." No, diets and weight loss programs are generally started at home in familiar surroundings and familiar life stressors. So you kick in your diet or weight loss program and start losing weight. There is discipline. And the discipline and determination brings success in losing weight.

Then we introduce vacation and we have a totally new set of emotions--many of them varying degrees of happiness. The days are not filled with chores and work, but instead the main chore is to fill the day. There is a lot more time to fill the day with food. Many opportunities and it's easy for the pounds to start accumulating.

If one is able to recognize these dynamics, one can identify the new different emotions that come with vacationing, take them straight, and leave the excess food out of the vacation. On the other hand, one can choose to be gluttonous knowing that when vacation is over, so is gluttony.

Both approaches are effective to enjoying vacation and staying thin. On the other hand, guilt sets in, self loathing sets in and all the weight is gained back.

The good news is that when you connect emotions with the desire to eat, you can take the emotions straight and leave food out of your life. Yet, while there are many coaches who deal with emotional eating, they generally have difficulty explaining the relationship between food and various degrees of happiness. Want to know more? Pick up your copy of the Scale Conspiracy which gives you the keys to dealing with the full range of emotions--not just the undesired emotions.

Now back to vacation. Tomorrow we're skipping breakfast and will choose to be gluttonous at a Luau. And then we'll chose to skip breakfast the following morning. My wife is a skin care specialist so she avoids the sun like the plague. Fortunately, we found this incredible tree right on the beach which provides an abundance of shade. So far we've seen two gorgeous sunsets and plan to soak up every moment while we're here. I can definitely say one thing. The last time we were here was three years ago just as Obama took office. This town was depressed and the restaurants and stores were empty. Today, the Waikiki is buzzing again--restaurants full and stores loaded with shoppers. It's a night and day thing in just three years. Scroll to the bottom of this post to see the sunset at Waikiki Beach.

The Scale Conspiracy E-book is only $14.95. Soft cover is $19.95 plus $3.00 handling and shipping and includes a free copy of the e-book--scroll down for the buy button
